LMS AGM 2007 President speech On behalf of the society, I would like to extend our sincerest appreciation and thanks to Advisor, past president of LMS Mr Kelvin Gee, for his presence. He has proven to be a steady hand in guiding the society. LMS would like to assure him of our unshakable confidence and trust in his advisory role. I would also like to welcome honourable guests, all delegates and members of LMS to attend this important event. The presence of the past presidents, delegates from respective neighbouring societies has given us encouragement and motivation as well as further strengthened the spirit of LMS in meeting this time round. The purpose of AGM is to: - Present the society achievements to the members. This should include a summation of the year activities and finances from the committee members
- Give members an opportunity to question the committee and discuss how they see the society developing
- Elect new committee members
In the beginning of the term, we have registered LMS to the Malaysian Student Department, UK Executive Council of Malaysian student. We also took the initiative to establish firm relationship with other Malaysian-societies in Liverpool, which are Malaysia-Singapore Association, Malays Speaking Circle, and Kelab UMNO Liverpool. We sent email to the respective president and secretary for all the appropriate events that we organised over the year. We also sent greeting of Hari Raya, UMNO 60th Anniversaries to all Malays community and KUL members. In return, we also received Chinese New Year Greeting from KUL President, Encik Yazid. Internally, we decided to extend our committee board for better society development by forming a supporting committee through president appointment. It is such an honour for us to have 3 extra intelligences joining our committee board. They are photographer, Mr Sze Jeeu Teck, Event Coordinator, Mr Tan Cher Han, and Academic Representative, Mr Henry Chieng. Now I would like to stop my speech here to allow my fabulous committee members to present their hard work. Thank you. Conclusion In conclusion, during this year, there has been a major focus on the curriculum, in particular, the academic aspect of students. Hence we organised few academically related events to assist students for their future career. I would like to express my apologies to the engineering student for not being able to arrange engineering career talk due to our time constraint. I am sure my successor will implement this promise, this will not get improved with time. We had a Malaysian Night meeting few days ago, I received an enquiry from the committee, and they were asking me why not many LMS members involved in the Malaysian Night. This is a very interesting question. Hence I did some research and look into this question properly. In fact, we have substantial amount of members participated this grand annual event. From the paid member list we have in hand. We have an estimation of 18 members who participated in this event. So I am not too sure why. As far as my understanding concern, I think the Malaysian Night Committee is not referring to LMS, but to certain group of members in the LMS. As a result, I would like to make a clarification statement right here. We LMS are actively involving in the LMS not only in the financial aspect but also the manpower contribution. However, I do not deny that LMN was indeed not receiving much support from the Chinese Malaysian in terms of casting. I think this is the leading factor for the LMS committee to rise up the question. This is due to the false perception from the people, which is LMS equal to Chinese Malaysian Society. This is absolutely not true; we are not uni-race society. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all the Malaysian to have more interaction between each other, join the working committee board if we need you. Since we are not the dominant ethnicity in the country, we should take pro-active action to abolish social diversity and promote the beauty of multi-cultural country. It is not easy for the leadership to manage a multi-cultural society like us, as every community has its own wishes and aspirations. However, we have done what we could do to meet the majority needs. LMS has always emphasized on the importance of social interaction. My final regret is that I was not able to generate a stronger bond among the LMS and other Malaysian related societies. Unless we take the decisive action, We haven been perfect, mistakes have been made and imperfections continue, like in any organisation, but we never point to anybody for responsibilities, instead, we critically evaluate the mistake and make it for future guidance. Retirement Ie been thinking about this day for a long time, but with mixed emotions, on the one hand I didn want it to get here. I didn want my student life to end. I enjoyed being a committee member. I enjoyed meeting new people and seeing different things. But on the other hand, I couldn wait for it to be over. I want to spend more time with myself, spend more time to be myself. I dun want to worry anymore about what will happen in the society. Well the day is here; my time has come, so I must move on, before I go I would like to thank a few people. To Danial, thanks a million, without you, my time in society would have been a lot harder. You gave me a place for me to talk to and keep my sanity. Words cannot express how much I appreciate what you have done for me. You and some of your friends are indeed my very best Malay friends that I ever had. Thanks for always giving a firm hand shake and warm hug. I am sure our friendship will last forever. My next order is to thank Gaik Min, my secretary. Thanks for her unflagging supports. Without her I would not be able to chair any meeting. And we don even have this room for our AGM. Thank you so much. Pei Gee, another breakthrough was her skill, contacts, and hard work that finally landed us significant grants that allow us to run our activities. Under her talented financial management, our society has achieved strong financial status! With her, I will not need to worry anything about the money. Speaking in a more direct way, I would not need to worry collecting tickets price or membership fees from the members, because, I am sure they will pay it happily! Henry, oh my lovely brother, he has been always around, ready to offer help to me. I have no single doubt on his ability to take charge in any events. I really enjoyed myself in the Chinese New Year casting. I would also like to thank you for your expertise and advices to all the society affairs. Furthermore, thanks for arranging a nice and beautiful course buddy to me, I really appreciate it. Adeline and Adi, thank you, thank you so much for your work in organising most of the event in LMS, Halloween night is one of the successes you have created! I am sure next year you can be a role model for the coming Halloween night committee. Mostyn, without you, I am definitely going to be lost in Nottingham University, could not find my way back to Liverpool! Million thanks to your time and your efforts becoming the MC today too! Your calm, steady and charming characters are always be my role models. I wish to be a girl. Edward, what else I can say to you? You are just rock. The time I spent with you on society work through MSN is uncountable! Thanks for not turning me away; I do recognise I gave you too much work to do in a short period of time. I am really sorry for this, but what amazed me is, at the end of the day, he still manages to complete everything for me. If times allow me to be young again, I would love to work with you again my dear. Cher Han, he is the one who always turn up on committee meeting and gave me very distinctive opinions on every aspect of the society. Thank you so much for his presence and playing an irreplaceable supportive role in all events Jeeu Teck, my housemate, my political mate! I really enjoyed the time sharing my view with you, and youe inspired me a lot to be a better person. Thank you! Being a President, this has dominated my time in university. I will remember the most are the challenging times, those that challenged my skill in communicating people, those that challenged my management in time, and those that challenged myslef as a growing human being. But even more, I will remember those with whom I had the honour of sharing those challenges. Most of you are here today. I learnt to accept all people as human beings and embrace their differences. Prejudice was not tolerated in our society. I learned how cruel making fun of others is and that is a ugly way for people to get attention. I have learned a lot along the way from my peers, some of the best pearls of wisdom are the most simple and many came from some of you here today: Don forget to forgive Bad news does not get better with time If you are not having fun, you are not doing it right Don forget to say hank You?/SPAN> Everyone of you in this audience has contributed to who I am today. Because of you, I have achieved much more in life that I ever had a right to expect, and become much richer in spirit I would like to thank you again for your support, words of encouragement and trust in me to lead the society. I am also looking forward to witness the birth of my successor later. I am confident that his reform minded administration will take us into a new chapter of excellence and greater successes. In closing, I would like to end with few words, if anyone asks me when the most wonderful time was in my university life, I can respond that with a good deal of pride and satisfaction, when I was a President of Malaysian Society. Thank you president leo khoo |
